From President Sebastian

Updates from President Sebastian

May 4th, 2012

Welcome to spring and summer ladies!  The weather has certainly been golf friendly and I hope you are enjoying some great golf.

Words cannot express my thrill and excitement at announcing Karen Shippy as our new Missouri Women's Golf Association Vice President.  Karen has been unanimously approved by our MWGA Executive Board and I would like to appoint her as per our bylaws.  As many of you know, Karen has been very active with the association over the years and has been a previous Board Member.  Karen's endless support of our association in the past is greatly appreciated.  Karen's expertise, professionalism and grace will be a great addition to our Board.  We look forward to many more great years.

We are looking forward to our Senior Tournament which will be held May 21st and 22nd at Twin Hills Golf and Country Club in Joplin.  The entry deadline is Wednesday May 9th so be sure and sign up quickly, if you are able to come.  Sue Browning, our Tournament Director, has been working closely with a dedicated committee to make this a Senior Championship to remember.  Morgan Lamberson, our MWGA intern, and Karen Raithel, MGA Director of Member and GHIN Services are prepared and ready for a great tournament.

Because of input from our membership, we have reconsidered our dress code.  Complaints from host clubs at our tournaments last year forced our Board of Directors to address this issue.  We have tried to be fair and still respond to the concerns of some of our 2011 tournament hosts.

MWGA DRESS CODE:  We ask each contestant to wear attire that is considered in good taste.  Therefore the following guidelines will be in effect:

  • Soft spikes only.
  • A Contestant may wear shorts, skorts or slacks.  Shorts and skorts that are four and one half inches above the top of the knee will be considered proper attire. The Tournament Committee may consider player height when determining proper attire, but reserves the right to determine the appropriateness of dress.  Tight shorts, skorts, or slacks are prohibited.  Athletic attire is prohibited.  Denim and tennis attire are prohibited.  Tank-like or cropped shirts are prohibited.  Sleeveless shirts must have a collar.  Shirts with sleeves need not have a collar.
  • The Tournament Committee reserves the right to determine whether a contestant's attire meets the standards of this dress code and if found that a contestant is not in compliance, shall not be allowed to compete.

Enjoy a wonderful spring and I look forward to seeing you at association tournaments.

As ever,

Nancy

Previous Updates:

February 6th, 2012
WELCOME TO A NEW ERA OF WOMEN’S GOLF WITH THE MISSOURI WOMEN’S GOLF ASSOCIATION!  Many exciting changes have taken place to make your golf championships run more effectively.  These are truly exciting times for our membership. We have moved into our new office located on Truman Boulevard in Jefferson City, MO.  Our move went extremely well.  Our desks, chairs, shelving, pictures and tables fit nicely into our new area.  Thanks again for the generous donations from our wonderful members.  Our awesome moving crew did a great job and I can’t thank them enough.

We are searching for an old WMGA flag from the early years.  If you know of anyone who might have one, we would love to frame it for our new office.  The office is a delightful setting for our new intern.  We are in the process of interviewing for this position and will have our intern hired very soon.  We have some wonderful applicants and we will have our intern on board by the second week of May.  Hopefully, you will be at the Senior Tournament in Joplin and can meet our new employee.

Please remember all memberships and tournament registrations will be sent to M.W.G.A., P.O. Box 104164, Jefferson City, MO   65110.

As we are renting our office space from the Missouri Golf Association, I would like you to know the individuals involved there.  Scott Hovis, Executive Director,  Randy Bickel has the title of Director of Junior Golf and Karen Raithel is Director of GHIN and Member Services.  Scott will supervise our intern on a daily basis.  Karen will be assisting MWGA with membership and tournament registration as well as providing direction for our intern.  Randy will not be involved with MWGA activities due to his tournament responsibilities.  The intern will be the only office personnel at our tournaments.  As the internship ends after four months, staffing the Scramble is still to be determined.  The MGA staff has been very warm and welcoming and we appreciate their help and support.  We are so grateful to the USGA for providing this opportunity to our organization providing for tournament administration, storage of equipment and transporting the equipment to the tournament.

All tournaments will go live March 5 which means our members are eligible to sign up for the Scramble as well as the Senior, Junior, Amateur and Mid Amateur.  Please help us get the word out to all our members.
SCRAMBLE NEWS  - Our members are eligible to sign up for the Scramble March 5th.  In 2013, the Scramble will be held in the Spring and the Senior will be in late summer or early fall.  After hearing suggestions from our members, the Board decided to make the switch allowing members to enjoy the Scramble early in the season.  Now you will be at the top of your game for the Senior!!!

You will notice all tournament forms will be exactly alike and Sue Browning is responsible for putting all tournaments into the same format.  Our forms then are sent to our ever loving Karen Johnson for her magic touch to place on our web site.  A lot of work goes into this effort and it is greatly appreciated.

Please be watching for our Tournament Modification document which was authored by Sue Browning.  You will see our tournament changes as our tournament committee and Board responded to the suggestions  of our members.

I am looking forward to seeing each of you at our Championships.

Kindest regards,
Nancy Sebastian

Previous update.....

Happy December to all!

It is with great excitement that I announce the approval of our USGA 2012 P.J. Boatwright grant which will provide MWGA with an intern for four months.  Many thanks for your wonderful support and encouragement with this project.  In addition to an intern helping transport tournament equipment, this individual will also assist with tournament administration.  We will be renting office space from the Missouri Golf Association (MGA) in Jefferson City which will allow us to store our equipment and help with office administration.  Club memberships will be mailed from the new MWGA office after January 1, 2012.  Should you have any questions, please feel free to visit the “Contact Us” section of our awesome web site.  We are also excited to offer online registration for our 2012 events.  Tournament forms will be available online after March 5.  You will have the option to sign up online or you can print out the form and send it by mail to the MWGA office.  Karen Raithel, MGA Administrative Assistant, will be the friendly voice should you contact the MWGA office after the first of the year.  As usual, your board members will always be available should you need anything.

Happy Holidays,

Nancy

Previous Update......

Our organization has been very fortunate to have had the wonderful leadership of Jayne Watson over the past years.  I greatly appreciate Jayne’s willingness to return to the Board of Directors in 2009 and admire her dedication to golf and especially women’s golf.  Jayne has a wealth of knowledge, experience and passion for the game of golf.  My gratitude is endless for Jayne’s great contributions to this association.

Our Board welcomes Nancy McWilliams as secretary and a member of our Executive Committee.  Nancy is from the Kansas City area and plays at Creekmoor Country Club.  Danna Phillips from WingHaven Country Club in OFallon, MO will become our new Junior Director.  Danna has worked with the Junior Program for the last few years.  Two Board Members have changed roles, Peg Eddy has become our Course Rating Director and Beth Chancellor assumes Membership Director responsibilities.

It is through your generous donations to Missouri Women’s Golf Education Association (MWGEA), our association was able to provide seven scholarships for our very deserving young ladies.  These young ladies have been active in junior golf and are the future of our organization.  We applaud their outstanding efforts and are great role models for our younger juniors.  We look forward to another year of charitable donations.  I want to thank you ladies for giving back to the future of golf in our association and encourage you to continue to contribute to MWGEA.

Please remember to renew your MWGA membership for the 2012 year.  Our web site www.mowomensga.org is filled with exciting news of the organization.  You will easily find the membership renewal form.  Karen Johnson does an outstanding job of keeping us informed.  Karen’s expertise, creativity and time are greatly appreciated.

2012 will be an exciting year for our association as our Board of Directors unanimously voted to approve an Alliance through the USGA with the MGA.  We will remain totally independent and our Board will continue to operate in the same way we have over the last few years.  We have applied for a USGA grant which, if accepted, would allow us to hire an intern for our tournament months.  We will rent office space from the MGA and the MGA will provide daily supervision of our intern.  The MGA will assist us in office administration as well through the winter months.  This alliance will provide storage space for our equipment as well as transporting our equipment to our tournament sites.  In addition, when approved, the grant will provide us with an intern to assist with tournament administration.  Thank you to many of you who have donated office furniture, shelving and cash donations.  We hope to physically move everything into the MGA office after the first of the year. The positive response we have had to this Alliance has been wonderful.

We have a lot of exciting venues for tournaments in 2012.  We are thrilled to be supporting the Joplin area in their rebuilding effort as Twin Hills will host the Senior Championship in the spring.  Please come and support the Joplin area as well as MWGA. Our Junior Championship will be hosted by Lake Valley Golf Club in Camdenton. Sedalia Country Club has graciously agreed to host the Junior Girl’s Four State Team Championship.  Our Amateur Championship will take place at the beautiful Shadow Glen in Olathe, KS.  Our Mid Amateur Championship will be hosted by Old Hickory Golf Club in St. Peters which is a lovely course.  Our Two Lady Scramble will find us visiting Meadow Lake Acres Country Club in New Bloomfield.  Please make plans now to participate in one or all of our tournaments at these beautiful courses.

Please remember your Board of Directors represent you.  We want to hear from you.  Of course, we love your positive responses but we need to hear any feedback you have.  We ask for your patience as we transition into our MWGA/MGA Alliance.  Please feel free to call me or any board member if you have concerns.

Enjoy a warm and wonderful fall and holiday season.  I look forward to seeing you in the spring.

Kindest regards,
Nancy
