Missouri wins 2013 Junior Four State Championship!

he Missouri, Nebraska and Iowa team traveled to the Manhattan Country Club in Manhattan, KS to meet their Kansas hosts at the 2013 Junior Four State Championship.   Since 1969, the Junior Girls Four State Championship has been an annual competition between Missouri, Nebraska, Kansas and Iowa in a two day team event.  Five girls from each state are chosen to compete in stroke play for 36 holes.  The lowest four scores from each team comprise the team score.

Iowa was the defending champion coming into the week.  Missouri has won eleven titles since the inception of the championship.  The Missouri team is chosen based upon top finishers in the Missouri Junior Championship that was held at Lake Valley Golf and Country Club.  Girls are eligible to represent Missouri if they are residents of Missouri or Johnson County, KS.  Last year’s loss to Iowa while hosting the Championship appeared to give the team a common goal of bringing home a win this year.  Veterans Jordan Chael (Overland Park - St. Thomas Aquinas) and Brooke Cusumano (St. Louis - Westminster Christian Academy) were joined by 2013 Junior Champion Jean Tyrrell (Leawood - Blue Valley North).  Amanda Kim (O’Fallon - Fort Zumwalt South) and Baile Winslow (Overland Park - St. Thomas Aquinas) added firepower to one of the strongest teams in Missouri history.  Two alternates were also chosen for team; Taylor Black (Warrensburg) and Sun Young Jung (Springfield).

Round One  The first round was delayed as local firefighters  tackled a stubborn brush fire from debris located between fairways.  Jordan Chael and Amanda Kim shot 74s to place Missouri in good shape.  Brooke Cusumano’s 75 and Jean Tyrrell’s 80 gave the Missouri team a 23 point lead over Iowa.  Last year’s medalist and Iowa standout shot a 75 and Nebraska’s Haley Thiele finished with a 74.  Team totals for day one were Missouri - 303,  Iowa - 326, Nebraska - 333 and Kansas - 349.  The initial scores indicated a scramble for medalist honors within the teams on day two!

Final Round: Missouri came out firing in round two with Chael and Cusumano both shooting 76.  Kim’s 79 and Tyrrell’s 80 gave the team a total of 614 to finish 38 shots ahead of Iowa.  Iowa’s Sindlinger carded an 81 to take her out of the medalist race while Thiele of Nebraska also fell back with her 77.  Jordan Chael was awarded the two day low total Medalist honor, winning by one shot over team mate Cusumano.  Iowa’s team took second place with their team total of 652, followed by Nebraska (661) and Kansas (688).

Congratulations to Team MISSOURI!  The MWGA is proud of our team for representing our state with the highest level of sportsmanship.  Our appreciation also goes to the parents and families of our team.. we couldn't have competed without your support!  Thank you ladies for playing so well!

History: The Four-State Junior Girls Championship began in 1969, as a one-day stroke play tournament. The team entry fee at that time was $10.00. In 1980 the tournament changed to a two-day stroke play tournament with the medalist being determined on the first day’s score. The entry fee was raised to $15.00. The date of the tournament had been just prior to or immediately following the 4th of July. Each team consisted of four girls, one alternate and coach or coaches. The four low scores of each team were added each day and totaled after the second day to determine the winner.  In 1989 at the coaches’ meeting at Leawood South Country Club, it was voted to raise the entry fee to $30.00. The entry fee buys the awards for the five girls on the winning team and the award for the medalist. These are engraved by the host state.  At the 1991 Four-State coaches meeting, it was voted to change the format for the medalist; instead of the medalist being the first day’s low score, the medalist now will be the two days’ total low score.  It was, also, agreed that tournament sites should be as close to the intersecting corners of the four states as possible.
Today:   The Four State Junior Girls Championship is composed of a golf team from Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa and Missouri. The method of choosing teams is strictly up to the individual states as tournaments vary.  The five best girls should represent their state.  Each team consists of four girls, one alternate and coach or coaches from each state.  The four low scores of each team are added each day and totaled after the second day to determine the winner.  The medalist is determined by the low two day total score.
